Students hiking local trails discover what is Beyond The Walls!

“Hey everyone! What’s that?”

I’m a likin’ these lichens.”

“This is the best field trip EVER. We get to look at BUGS!”

“Grab the camera, I’ve got something.”

Would you be surprised that these words are out of the mouths of 13 and 14-year olds on a hiking expedition?

Do you want our youth to be excited about the natural world?

Join me as I share experiences implementing a National Geographic Explorers Grant to get my students outside and involved in their natural world. Follow us as we leave behind the school walls, Chromebooks, and their personal devices (and video games).

I’m a 27 year veteran educator with a career spanning 4 schools and every social studies subject in 8th through 12th grade. Last spring a colleague and I applied for the grant as we saw a HUGE gap in our students’ connections with the environment. We wanted our students to have passion and empathy for their Earth and to learn to slow down and really look at the environment.

So come along and journey with us this year down the path that leads

Beyond The Walls….

and into the Natural World.

Upcoming posts:

  • What did the students discover on the November hikes?
  • What did we (the educators) realize that we needed to now support?
  • What are our next steps?
  • What technology are we using to support the students?
  • Who are the guest speakers who bring their passions to life for the students?
  • And so many more…
